Europeans of this period were just beginning to visit Carolinians on their home islands. When Freycinet's ship lay off Tamatam in 1819, Arago sketched one of the sailing canoes that came out to greet them. What you see here is a modification of the sketch by a later artist. This may explain why the outrigger got lost and how the canoe acquired a second covered platform.
