The first school in Micronesia--and in the entire Pacific--was opened on Guam just a year after the arrival of the Jesuit missionaries in 1668. This school, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, was rebuilt many times over its 200-year life span. This sketch shows the school in 1818. Its boarding students, boys aged 7 to 11, learned religion, music and Spanish, as well as gardening, care of farm animals, and tailoring.
