Hey, colleagues if you’re not the one supporting the family then you should not talk about the salary for teachers to be raises or not. Have you ever do a budgeting in your family? Think about the inflation in Chuuk now days. Do teachers have enough pay check to accommodate their needs? Think about the fuel costs and food products costs. They have skyrocketed and at the same time the paycheck has reached ground zero.

 Just pulling your leg,

Teachers are the main reason why we are all on micsem. They deserve every bit of raise that they deserve. But, what we should be mindful of whether our governments, as stretched in finances as they are right now, can accomadate this need currently. We should not forget other sectors as well like Health Care and so forth.
With the incessant draw-down being implemented, we will certainly be in for a rough ride. It is all the more reason why each State must have a plan to counteract and balance our priorities. If we are not admitting to inflation right now, it may get worse because fuel is creating havoc on all economies.
How will the government respond to the needs of citizens, financial and what not, is something that we do not know yet. We just have to brace ourselves and hope for the best.

Teachers as well as all people working should get a higher minimum wage.
As far as raises go, yes a teacher should get a raise, but only if they are evaluated on the basis of their performance as being productive based on set criteria. There are teachers out there that deserve raises that never get them and teachers whom should never even have been considered for the job that are getting raises faster than the kids are growing and learning. I sometimes wonder if there should be an independent team of evaluators on teacher performance other than the principal. Favoritism is still a major factor in our little islands when it comes to raises and that is a fact.
There is the question, who else knows a teacher better than the principal? But I ask my own questions, Should the principal's evaluation be the only evaluation to consider when it comes to a raise? Does the principal even understand how to evaluate a lesson plan and the execution of it? Does a principal even know the extent of how a teacher evaluates a student and how effective they are? Does the principal's personal idea of a classroom environment effect the way a teacher is being evaluated because he or she has a different teaching environment approach? Some principals think that a quiet classroom is the ideal learning environment as apposed to a teacher who thinks that a classroom with vocal students and buzzing activities is ideal.
I know some people will point out that a teacher needs to sign their evaluation before it is turned in to the main office. A teacher has the option to sign and agree or sign and disagree and request a hearing to appose the evaluation. There is protocol for these things, but remember, if you appose, that could be used against you as not conforming to policy and all that. Another point to remember is this, a teacher can get 2 raises on one evaluation if they exceeded all expectations on the evaluation. But who is to say if it was fair or not?
Okay, I think I went a bit over board there...way off the subject? LOL...well, you know...over analytic...
*slowly eases out the door...poof! disappears!*

If you're talking about inflation and skyrocketted cost of fuel and electricity, it is not only teachers. The whole FSM system needs to work out new salary adjustments to offset the fuel adjustment in our bills. Very imbalance when we see the cost of fule and electricity raised and salary remained or decreased. The cost of living is increasing, the social activities are increasing, and the family income is going down. Only very few people have enough income to accommodate the social activities, electricity, fuel and others. These are the people that have a good salary, that have kids in the military, that have kids working for cash in the mainland and etc. So leaders, please do a reform on this. How can we offset this situation on the imbalance of income and expenses. Please help.

 YES,
i do believe that teachers get a raise in salaries. Like how everyone had shared they have very much shaped us ( i mean educationally). They deserve a raise in their salaries. There are very qualified people to teach out there and the reason why they do not take up the work is because of the salaries. The salaries are too low, and i am not blaming them. With the cost of living today, people are discouraged to take up jobs that the salaries are very low.

Teacher salary is a problem in many places. As an education supporter, I believe a teacher's salary should be more desirable than say, a cashier. It is important that our kids are educated with teachers that are good and enjoy teaching. It is important to provide the best learning enviornment for our kids. Better salary for teachers will make it attractive to a number of people, thus creating competition for the job, more people to pick from, more options and so on. But like some of the posters have said, performance should be evaluated, as well as professional development to ensure ALL teachers are building their capacity too. Outside of the classroom, it is the whole community's responsibility to shape our children. The things the young generation are learning today, will shape our future. Let everyone lend a hand, support our education system!

All of the thoughts mentioned were okay but don't you folks think that we should consedered other departments as well? Yeah, maybe is better to raise teachers salaries but don't you think that their work is important but not as important as those departments that put their lifes to protect lifes and properties? What about those who save lifes, aren't they important as well? Teachers, you said they need to raise but don't you think that is not that important now a days? Why I said that is that we're in the time of technology and almost everything are much esier that before. People are getting smarter and probably one can teach his/her own children without the help of a teacher. Computer for instands can even give you everything that you will be needing from a teacher. I am sorry folks but I truely believe that we should considered those departments that giving up their lifes twenty four hours a day to protect, save lifes and properties. Why should we raise the salary of teachers while all they do is go to their classrooms and lectures to their students? For sure if we could looked back from past to present of our leaders that we have elected to be our leader whether in legislature seats or even governor, there are some that I believe that were elected by their populatity but not by their intellegence. I apologize but this is just an opinion.

 I agree with Misfit,

There is a great need for all government employees to get higher pay. I DO NOT AGREE WITH OUR FSM GOVERNMENT OR STATE GOVERNMENT WHEN THEY EXCLAIMED, 'THERE IS NOT ENOUGH MONEY'. If our government care enough about the people, salary should have been raised centuries ago. We brag saying we are a new nation, yet we are still carrying old TT policies on salary. What kind?

This is a great challenge for our FSM President, Honorable Mr. Mori. My fellow FSM citizens, if any of our leader works hard on raising salary, that leader is a real leader. This goes to all of our leaders in the FSM. Let's change gear. Why don't this subject be number one on your next agenda meeting. This is something very very serious for you our leaders to challenge.

Keep this in mind!!!!

I agreed with all points expressed in here, especially those by Misfits... sounds like she's a teacher or former teacher herself. Yeah the government could hire a third party to conduct a job audit on all its public school teachers like what Chuuk State did, through OIA. Many teachers' salaries in the FSM are lower than secretaries' or even clerks' salaries and this warrant a change here to make our system equitably credible and fair.

Rumor is that nearly 50% of FsM teachers do not have even associate degrees, but then many of these teachers could actually teach better than those with bachelor degrees. This ought to make those folks at DOEs work harder to sort them out and identify those who truly deserve the salary increase for merit purposes.

The bottomline is every employees of both public and private sectors do deserve salary increases or some form of COLA to adjust to the run-away inflation and rising cost of fuel and food in the FSM. Of course with their salaries and allowances, the leaders haven't truly feel the impacts just yet, so they could still breath during this dilemma while the rest of us are dying.

its all good to have a pay raise, but can we really afford that?

Its not about who is the leader and all. its about money. If we have enough money and the leaders think there is enuff to raise the salary so be it. Don't just do the juukese way of doing things, pass the laws without money appropriation. Thats cheating the heard working pple of chuuk.

The recent mtng with the FSM President said that he okayed the minimum wage in the states level, but its up to the individual states' legislature to appropriate em'. So i guess the states don't have the money to do so.

I would say that teachers get their pay raise when chuuk student population improves in their skills, that would be a true reflection of a hard working teacher. Nowdays it shows that our chuuk student population is poor in english grammer and other subjects. it shows that teachers are still no showing up to work and still get paid for it. i'm still having problem improving my english skills, courtesy of my english teacher a high school graduate. Back then they were the best we had.
they struggle but they did they best.

I like that question which says, where will we get the money from to do salary raise to our employees. Why don't we stand up on our own two feet before we consentrate on something like raising salaries. For sure all we do was talking nonsenses about thing we knew that cannot happend or is not exsist at all. When can we stand on our own two feet? Why depending on U.S.A. You guys know what? I think is better we need to ask U.S.A if we could become one of its states or rather territories so we won't be worry about negotiation anymore. As long as we're under the compact, we will be facing such problems until I don't know when. Maybe it about time we put realizations in our mind than just electing someone that cannot take us to somewhere rather than financial crises. Why worried about salary raising while we're still under financial crises? Come my friends, lets stop dreaming and get on to what will brings us a good future.

I hate to say this but no. At least not in Chuuk state.

Chuuk state's education system is in trouble not because teachers are not paid enough but because, quite honestly, they don't work hard enough. I have seen and heard of many occasions when teachers simply do not show up to school, or classes end early for no real reason. The other problem is that teachers (at least in Chuuk) are simply not qualified-how can a teacher teach basic Math and English if they are not trained in it (or simply don't understand it) themselves? I would be MORE than happy to support a pay raise if the teachers improved their performance, which we will see if the students' grades increase.

We cannot blame the students for their grades. It is not a money issue. It is a teacher issue. And until they improve, the system as a whole will not, no matter how much money you throw around. I am truly sorry to say this. To all the good teachers out there working hard to improve you classes and Chuuk state, I thank you. But where are you all?

Teachers in Chuuk shouldn't get any pay raise. They should take a pay cut or get their act together. I was fortunate that my parents work hard to put me in private school in US. While in college I had fellow chuukese who graduated from Chuuk High School, Berea Christian School, Mizpa High School and that other high school across from the old police station or V6AK radio station whom can't read, write or do simple math like decimal and fraction. My thought was how the hell did they past high school. I don't blame the students cause they were very motivated and willing to learn. I spent many hours helping them with various assignments. The problem is not just with the teachers but the entire education system in Chuuk. Chuuk government should really do something about the quality of education in Chuuk. FORGET PAY RAISE! JUST THINK CHANGE
